Montgomery Canal

Down the rest of the Monty and back to the start

by Keith May 18, 2019 No Comments

It’s a Saturday morning.. the car was booked until Tuesday.. but with bugger all signal here – I think we need to move..  so the car has gone back early (with a refund for the unused days) and were good to go. I’m also back in the bad books..   the toilet tanks full and we had to break out the porta-loo yesterday..  so were heading all the way down to the end of the Montgomery Canal where there is a pump out station..

Now.. we were warned about this weekend when we came down the locks by the lockies.. that the annual Montgomery Canal Triathlon is to be held this weekend..  so moving today will be fun – and there are going to be a lot of canoes about.. some who know what there doing.. some who dont!

And as we have to goto the end of the canal, turn around and then run the whole length.. were going to get a lot of these all day long….

There is also a horse drawn trip boat that I didn’t know about – so its always nice to find out something new.

Horse Brawn Boat on the Montgomery Canal

And yes.. there are canoes everywhere – and were going against the flow!

Horse Drawn Boat being passed by a canooWe made it to the end with no major issues – and it took a while as the speed limit on the lower section has been reduced further to 2mph now – which for us is just over tick-over, and were now being overtaken by the canoes!!   Through the lift bridge – which was opened for us (twice as the turning point is the other side of the bridge) – as its that low.. the canoes cant get under it either – so CRT are there opening and closing it all day long today!   Thank you very much! 😀

Arrived at the service point..  emptied the toilet tank.. emptied the porta-loo.. filled the water tank.. watered the plants..  had lunch..  got going again! 😀

Back past the horse drawn boat base..

Back through Heath house Bridge..

And past Rednall Basin – which has as permanently closed swing bridge in-front of it so boats cant go down there..  I want to stop and have a look..  but no..   need to get to the end today and still have time to relax for a while (It’s tiring all this boating stuff you know! 😀 )

And across the finish line..

Moored up just beyond the “finish line” at what is left of the Weston Branch – near the water point so we can use the hose in the morning to fill the tank.. and get rid of the rubbish (which I left on the roof – as you can see – so I don’t forget this time!)

And watching the rest of the competitors complete  the Triathlon.  It has been a good day, and I hope the canal raised lost of funding for the further extension of the Monty. I do know that St. Johns were there, and there were no major issues that they had to deal with – in all they had a quiet day – which means a good day for everyone else 🙂

I’m going to amend the booking we made last week when we came down the locks as it needed a return date stating..  (and as its a Saturday – and CRT only do Mon to Fri in the call centre – I need a signal to do it online..  crossed fingers). And if we don’t change the booking, we wont be allowed up the lock flight!

We should be off the Monty tomorrow..  and onto Ellesmere – There a good signal there, reasonable moorings and a Tesco!
