Kennet and Avon Canal , River Thames

Marlow to Reading (K&A)

by Keith May 28, 2018 No Comments

Its been a long day today.. and both the boat and myself are feeling it!

After arriving at Marlow.. we joined the attraction sect, lots of people walking past this very popular spot, a few stopped to take photos of the cats, the dogs.. Anna’s garden on the roof! Several conversations later we managed to settle down and get ready for the long day that followed..

Set off this morning at about 10am from the £18 a night mooring..  yes..  that’s not a typo..  £18 a night. And after the first two locks, we found that we basically had the river to ourselves.

After Hambledon lock.. it was Henley-on-Thames, and the location of the regatta..

And this one seriously long straight piece of river!

Eventually. we get to the end of the reach, and into Henley-On-Thames.. Once through Henley-on-Thames, it was onto  Shiplake Lock to get a pump-out.. unfortunately, it hasn’t been working for weeks – so that’s not going to happen!  Through Sonning Lock and a quick call into the Thames and Kennet Marina for diesel and the missed pump-out.

Once that was done – onto the K&A !

Unless this is the only one.. they do the locks a little different here..   wheels that control the paddles..

We got 3 guards today..  obviously they don’t like Reading..
