I will be needing a car for the end of this week and a few phone calls have dictated that we need to go down the Montgomery Canal, as there is a hire company in Owestry and they will pick me up from Queen’s Head – so its a call to the CRT to book passage down the lock flight.
With “the Monty”, unlike other canals, you have to book passage onto and off the canal as they restrict the number of boats that can travel down onto the canal, and to a window of 12pm to 2pm (where they can check boats in and out) – outside of those times, the locks are locked off and you cannot use them. And yes.. there are only railings on one side!.. so being 6 inches from a 200ft drop does make you wonder..
Back past the old Lime Kilns.. which are mainly used for storage for the residential boats here rather than the production of quicklime.
And over the Chirk aqueduct.. and were back in England once more..
Dropped down the two locks and met a nice older couple on a hire boat starting to go in and up the first – and with it being their first lock decided to help them up and through the lock..
We eventually arrived just before the entrance to the Monty.. back a bit and away from other boats as we had more washing to do, and the washing machine was being a pain and constantly cutting out as the batteries were not charged when we started off.. So its out with the gennie to finish the wash off – hopefully before 8pm..
Tabitha decided that this is a good spot and asked for the gennie to be turned off so she could go hunting as it was scaring away the wildlife!
